[WP] You and the rest of your companions sit in the dark, with more annoyance than humor, as the party member that's been trying to get themselves kicked out tries to sneak away "And where do you think you're going?""And where do you think you're going?" Xu asks, disgruntled. With an upward flick of his hand, he casts a binding spell on Eff.Eff's body tightens with the bind as she stumbles onto the floor, a bead of sweat forming on her forehead."Out of the cave?" she laughs nervously."And where is that exactly?" he interrogates her through gritted teeth, slowly tightening the bind around her. Eff winces. I look away."Easy, Xu. You'll be under investigation if she comes back injured," Leesi consoles as she puts a delicate hand on Xu's arm. I admire Leesi's kindness. It seems she's the only one here capable of playing devil's advocate.The sound of chains moving to loosen echoes softly and I hug my knees to my chest, feeling the cold drape my body like a silk blanket. Across from me, Haru is drawing a map of the cave in the dirt, trying to remember our exact route from memory. And beside him, Rin is wiping away any signs of wear on his shield.Why Eff was trying to sneak away with half our stuff, no one knows. A raid request was made on the guild's notice board to clear Celestial Cave by one of the locals. Eff’s name was written at the top of the sign-up page, which didn’t particularly strike anyone suspicious of her."This shouldn't be possible," Haru says to himself. "Come look at this for me, Saki"I scoot forward and look at Haru's map. It's a straightforward diagram, showing several pathways that connect with one another in a maze-like fashion. Then, a long line representing the tiresome 2-hour trek."Seems right," I shrug, validating Haru's cartography skills."No, it's not. This cave should not have a tunnel this long,” Haru explains. He stands up and starts pacing. “We’ve seen the mountain. It doesn’t extend this far.”“Maybe we’re going down into the ground?” Leesi suggests, moving her attention towards Haru.“No, that’s not it. There’s no slope,” Haru counters back. He begins rubbing his chin like a chess player expected to make a move.“What if you’re just miscalculating the cave’s length, Haru? Have you ever thought about that?” Rin yawns, clearly not convinced that Haru is as smart as he lets on. I may disagree with this view, however.“I just drew a map of the entire cave based on the paths we took and you’re telling me I miscalculated?” Haru counters again, his tone slightly raised like the hairs on my back. His agitation begins to settle and I could feel his frustration of not fully knowing what’s going on here.Eff laughs. Not a giggle, or a chuckle. A mocking laugh. A kind of laugh that leads Xu to believe that she knows more than she’s letting on because the bind tightens and she groans.“There’s only one way to find out, then,” Xu challenges as he builds up a flame in his right hand.With one swift movement, Xu throws a fireball down the long, dark corridor we had just spent 2 hours walking down. The bright, orange light travels through the cave and in a blink of an eye, it disappears, leaving behind the smell of faint smoke.For a second, I hold my breath.And in that breath, the same light illuminates the opposite end of the path, the path we should be moving towards, as Rin uses his shield to absorb the fireball’s momentum.Rin looks at Xu. Xu looks at Haru.I’m afraid this may only be the beginning of Celestial Cave’s dark secrets.
